For our third concert of this, our 76th season, Watford Philharmonic Society will be performing a selection of exciting but very different works.  Soloists are Charmian Bedford (soprano), Jeanette Ager (mezzo soprano), Daniel Hoadley (tenor )and James Gower (bass baritone). Pianist James Sherlock will be joining us for Beethoven’s Choral Fantasia, Constant Lambert’s ‘The Rio Grande’, and accompanying the chorus in Percy Grainger’s ‘Shallow Brown’. The two other major works of the evening are Beethoven’s Mass in C Major, and the ever popular Egmont Overture.

The choral Fantasia, which is for piano, choir, and orchestra, is considered by many to be an early version of the final movement of the 9th symphony as it has many similarities.  The Mass in C is one of Beethoven’s less frequently performed works, but has been described as a ‘long-underrated masterpiece’.
Shallow Brown is an arrangement of an English sea shanty by Australian composer Percy Grainger.  Our final piece will be the exciting ‘The Rio Grande’, written in 1927 by the English composer Constant Lambert.  Lots of jazz influence and use of the piano in a similar vein to  Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.

This concert will be in Christ Church, St. Albans Road, Watford, as we await the completion of the refurbishment of the Watford Colosseum.  This very welcoming early 20th Century ‘Arts and Crafts’ style church has excellent acoustics as well as excellent heating!

For all our concerts we have introduced a new family friendly pricing policy, with up to two free tickets for young people (18 and under) ordered with each of our regularly priced tickets. For larger groups of young people, tickets will be available at half the regular price.  Note also that wheelchair users may order a free ticket for their carer. 


Soloists

Jeanette Ager - Mezzo Soprano/Alto

Jeanette Ager - Mezzo Soprano/AltoJeanette Ager was awarded an Exhibition to study at the Royal Academy of Music. Jeanette has won the Gold Medal in the Royal Over-Seas League Music Competition, the Richard Tauber Prize and won the Tillett Trust’s Young Artist Platform.

As a soloist, Jeanette's concert and oratorio work has included: recitals and other appearances at the Wigmore Hall; Handel’s Messiah at St David’s Hall, Cardiff; Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius at the Queen Elizabeth Hall; Tippett’s Child of our Time at The Royal Festival Hall; Verdi’s Requiem at Gloucester Cathedral; Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis at The Barbican Hall and Mozart’s Mass in C minor at the Cadogan Hall. In addition to performances at many of the leading venues in the United Kingdom, Jeanette's concert work has taken her to Bermuda, the Czech Republic, Spain Libya and China.

Her operatic roles have included Cherubino in the Marriage of Figaro, (Mozart); Dido in Dido & Aeneas, (Purcell); The Marquise of Birkenfield in La Fille du Regiment (Donizetti); Rosina in The Barber of Seville (Rossini) Suzuki in Madama Butterfly (Puccini) and Thea in The Knot Garden (Tippett). With the Royal Opera House she appeared as one of the Apprentices in Wagner's Meistersinger at Covent Garden.

As a soloist, Jeanette has recorded for Hyperion, Deutsche Grammophon and Philips.

Jeanette recently sang the Angel in the first performance of Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius in China. Jeanette also performed at the recent 3 Choirs Festival singing Britten’s Spring Symphony and John McCabe’s Songs of the Garden which was broadcast on Radio 3.

Jeanette is currently singing the role of Rosina in Rossini’s, The Barber of Seville


Charmian Bedford - Soprano

Charmaian Bedford - SopranoCharmian is a graduate from Clare College, Cambridge, where she read Classics. She gained a distinction on the advanced postgraduate diploma in vocal performance at Trinity College of Music where she studied with Alison Wells, supported by a scholarship. She now learns with Lillian Watson.

Operatic rôles includeBlanche (Les Dialogues des Carmélites) Anne Truelove (The Rake’s Progress) both for Trinity College of Music, Mimì (La Bohème) with The Choir of London in the West Bank and for the recently acclaimed OperaUpClose in Kilburn, Tytania (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) for both Opéra de Baugé and Garsington Opera (cover), Rowan (Little Sweep) for Jubilee Opera in Aldeburgh, Belinda (Dido and Aeneas) for Old Vic New Voices, and Gilda (Rigoletto) for Bury Court Opera (cover).

An avid contemporary performer, Charmian made her Opera North debut last year in a new piece by Mira Calix as part of their Resonance project and went on to work with the composer again on Streetwise Opera’s recent "Fables - A Film Opera" at the Spitalfields Music Festival. She has worked with Tête à Tête ‘The Opera Festival’ performing four newly-commissioned single act operas, and most recently has given a recital of new song cycles by Lloyd Moore and Graham Williams at The Royal Acedemy of Music.

Recent concert performances have included 2nd Woman in Dido and Aeneas with the Academy of Ancient Music at the Wigmore Hall, subsequently touring to North Africa and China, Mahler’s Fourth Symphony with Aurora Orchestra for the Deal Music Festival, Israel in Egypt with the Monteverdi Choir, Berio’s Laborintus II with Aurora and Mahogany Opera at LSO St Luke’s, Mozart’s Requiem for the Maribor Festival in Slovenia with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Richard Tognetti and Bach’s St Matthew Passion and Magnificat with the Academy of Ancient Music.


Daniel Hoadley - Tenor

Daniel Hoadley - TenorDaniel Hoadley began his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, winning a prestigious scholarship on the Associate Diploma Course. Following this he began working for the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Scottish Opera, performing roles including First Priest Magic Flute, The Leader Eugene Onegin, The Attendant I Due Foscari, Third Jew Salome and The Vendor La Bohème.

After working at Scottish Opera, Daniel entered the Royal Northern College of Music with a scholarship on the Professional Performers Course. Since then he has appeared as tenor soloist in the music provided for the new Globe Theatre productions in its inaugural season. He has recorded solo roles for EMI classics in Puccini’s La Bohème, La Rondine and Il Tabarro.

Recent roles include Luiz in The Gondoliers and Danilo in The Merry Widow for the Carl Rosa Opera Company, Candide for The Opera Group, Ulisse in Monteverdi’s opera “Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria” at the Aldeburgh Festival and The Globe Theatre, London. Daniel has recently been performing at English National Opera, covering in Kismet and The Gondoliers and performing the role of St. Brioche in The Merry Widow and Marullo in Rigoletto. He has just returned from a tour of Japan with the Royal Opera House.


James Gower - Bass / Baritone

James Gower - Bass/BaritoneJames Gower was born in Newport, South Wales and studied at St John’s College, Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music.  He is currently studying with Cathy Pope and Robert Lloyd.

James made his English National Opera debut performing Lord Krishna/Parsi Rustomji Satyagraha by Philip Glass and joined the ENO Young Singers Programme for the 2007/2008 season.  His roles have included Mercury/Lictor/3rd Seneca Friend L’Incoronazione di Poppea, Bogdanowitsch The Merry Widow, Notary Der Rosenkavalier, Ormonte Partenope, Nikitich Boris Godunov, Speaker Die Zauberflöte, Ceprano Rigoletto and Sciarrone Tosca.  As an associate artist with Welsh National Opera, James performed Un Moine Don Carlos and Second Armed Man Die Zauberflöte.  For Glyndebourne Festival Opera he performed Pinellino Gianni Schicchi, (broadcast on BBC TV and performed at the Proms) and Erster Priester/Zweiter geharnischter Mann Die Zauberflöte.  For Glyndebourne on Tour he sang Doctor Pelléas et Mélisande and Doctor Grenvil La Traviata.  Other roles include Raimondo Lucia di Lammermoor and Seneca L'Incoronazione di Poppea for Iford Festival, Colline La Bohème for Opera Theatre Company, High Priest in Dvorák’s Vanda for University College Opera, Bartolo/Antonio Le Nozze di Figaro for the Classical Opera Company and Leporello Don Giovanni, Cambridge Touring Opera.

Recent concert engagements include Messiah with the RSNO and Christus St John Passion at Bath Abbey.  Engagements outside the UK have included Israel in Egypt, Pagano I Lombardi and Silva Ernani at Dortmund’s Konzerthaus.


James Sherlock - Piano

James Sherlock - PianoWinner of the Royal Overseas League Piano Competition in 2010, James Sherlock enjoys a growing reputation as a soloist, chamber musician and conductor.

A regular guest at many of UK's major music festivals, in the past season he has given recitals at the Leeds International, Edinburgh Fringe, Ryedale, Deal, Chelsea Schubert, St Martin in the Fields, and in the Queen Elizabeth and Barbican Halls. He also visits the USA, Brazil, South Africa and Japan, in the latter performing Beethoven's Choral Fantasy (as heard tonight). He is active as a communicator and workshop leader, working around the country on behalf of Live Music Now in venues such as hospices, schools and prisons.

James was organ scholar at Trinity College Cambridge, during which time he won the Marcello Galanti International Organ Competition, and upon graduating was named a winner of BBC Fame Academy - The Next Generation. He continues to study piano with Joan Havill at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

James last performed with the Watford Philharmonic as an organist in Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb (March 2010), and is organist of St Bartholomew the Great in London. He also conducts the Lea Singers, with whom he appeared last month in St John's Smith Square performing the Monteverdi Vespers with I Fagiolini and the English Cornets and Sackbuts.
